• Grade 5 examination which conducts in Sri Lanka with the purpose of admission to a National school is an extremely competitive examination as the students who sit this examination are greatly outnumbered by the seats available
• As I progressed through to grade 6 without going through what majority of students had to go, I met these bright students who came from all over the country. I experienced first hand how talented these students were & how they really deserved to be in a school like mine.
• I also thought about how many talented students miss out on the opportunity to study in a school like mine, just because due to couple of points short
• As we progressed through to our final Advance Level examination (G.C.E A/L) a decisive moment will arise as this will decide the future dreams of further education opportunities & career aspirations.
• This unfortunate situation arises due to limited number of Universities. Of the 25% (limited) of students who sit the Advance level examination only 2% get selected to proceed further education.
• I personally did not get selected to a local University even though I passed my examination with reasonably good grades. In many other countries in the world this grade would easily have secured me a place at university.
I was very privileged because of my parents could afford to send me to Australia & gained a great education, which has opened up so many opportunities for my future.
So many of those talented children who earned the opportunity to study in one of the National schools are unable to secure a place in one of the local Universities and left with no choice but to accept any employment opportunity available in order to survive.
Is this the end for a talent whose success is endless?
I do not want to see another talented child have to follow the same process as we all have been through & then have no way of realising their potential.
“My invitation is to all, Come & join hands with me because together we can make a difference”.
