‘Ran Nuwan Gaman’ (Journey With a Golden Brain), is the first step that was taken by the Rathnasiri Rajapakse Sarana Foundation (‘RRSF’) to fight poverty by providing proper education to low income family children.
This scholarship will be continuing for 4 years as the children who are successful are in year 10 & they will be receiving this fund till they complete their advance level studies in school level.
Opening ceremony of this event was held on the 22nd of August 2009 at Sri Kalyani Gangaramaya temple, Colombo, Sri Lanka. Initially the Foundation has selected 30 children from Mattakkuliya (a suburb in Colombo district) area.
Mattakkuliya is a town in capital Colombo where it represents multi ethnicity & also the area is highly industrialised than residential. Majority of the people who live in this area are poor & receiving fewer facilities to maintain their basic life style. Most of the people are factory workers (laborers) who work casual basis to survive.
30 children who were selected by RRSF were hand picked from 15 different schools with the help of school principals & teachers to maintain a quality of this scholarship program. All 30 children are high achievers in both academic & extracurricular activities of respective schools. To maintain these children are coming from low-income families the Foundation (‘RRSF’) has visited each individual’s house & had discussions with their parents to determine their economic conditions.
